Aperam’s Stainless Europe company has been successfully certified to operate to the ResponsibleSteel (TM) standard by independent auditors

Luxembourg – September 23, 2021 (3:00 PM CET) – Aperam announces today that its Stainless Europe operations have been successfully certified to operate according to the ResponsibleSteel (TM) standard by AFNOR independent auditors. The ResponsibleSteel (TM) initiative is the world’s leading sustainability certification program for the steel industry and its certification follows a rigorous audit of company practices.

Mr. Timoteo Di Maulo, CEO and member of the management team, said: “Aperam becoming the first stainless steel player to be certified to the ResponsibleSteel (TM) standard reassures our stakeholders that we are producing responsibly. With Aperam, our customers have selected a partner of choice, offering them responsibly produced solutions that are also 100% recyclable and low-carbon – solutions indispensable to the sustainable society in which we strive to live. At Aperam, we believe that true business success cannot be combined with social and environmental sustainability and we will pursue our strategy of further integrating sustainability into all our processes. Aperam is proud to be the leader of its industry in the area of corporate responsibility and we are delighted that all the efforts of our teams on sustainability and responsibility, already demonstrated by our state-of-the-art CO2 footprint , are now fully recognized with a global third party certification of part of our processes at Stainless Europe. ”

The ResponsibleSteelTM standard, which was jointly designed by business partners and NGOs with the aim of promoting steel as a responsible material of choice, contains 12 principles with over 200 requirements that set the benchmark for the production of responsible steel. The audit of Aperam’s facilities, which took place in June and included Aperam’s sites in Châtelet, Genk, Gueugnon, Isbergues and Saint-Denis in Belgium and France, focused on sustainability topics such as:

– Governance and ethics

– Health and safety and other labor and human rights

– Climate change, greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity

– Water management and other environmental impacts

– Stakeholder engagement and relations with the local community

In accordance with the standard process, the Aperam sites were checked on the basis of written documentation and were subject to on-site audits by third-party auditors from AFNOR Certification. The analysis was supplemented by more than 40 exchanges with our external stakeholders, in particular elected officials, residents, associations, subcontractors, employees and unions.

An independent assurance panel has reviewed the final audit report and agreed with the audit team’s conclusion that Aperam meets the ResponsibleSteel (TM) criteria.

Ms. Anne-Claire Howard, President and CEO of ResponsibleSteel (TM), said: “I am delighted that Aperam, a member of ResponsibleSteel (TM) since 2019, is the first stainless steel manufacturer to receive our certification for its products. European stainless steel operations. The ResponsibleSteel (TM) standard, created by the steel industry’s only truly global multi-stakeholder initiative, contains a very demanding set of ESG criteria that we hope will give businesses and consumers confidence that the site on where the steel is produced is operated responsibly. We would like to congratulate the Aperam teams who have supported the development of the ResponsibleSteel (TM) standard and are now able to see it implemented at five sites in France and Belgium. We look forward to continuing to work together on the next phase of our journey – Certified Steel. ”
