Desktop Metal is the first company to offer D2 tool steel in a two-step bonded metal additive manufacturing process, allowing customers to take advantage of a simple, nearly hands-free process to produce parts for D2 applications high strength such as cold forming of metals. tools, dies, punches and injection molds with compliant cooling channels.

D2 is a versatile high carbon, high chromium tool steel characterized by its high hardness and compressive strength after heat treatment. This tool steel offers high wear resistance properties, dimensional stability and corrosion resistance in the hardened state, a key advantage for conformal cooling applications. D2 is used for a wide variety of cold work tools that require a combination of wear resistance and moderate toughness, such as striking and sizing elements, cutting and forming dies, tools shear cutters, gauges, burnishing tools and other wear parts.

“D2 tool steel has always been a difficult and expensive material to work with,” said Jonah Myerberg, co-founder and CTO of Desktop Metal. “With this material now available on the Studio System 2, we have streamlined the production of D2 parts into two simple steps for more affordable accessibility and price. We are excited to be able to offer our customers this new material with higher post heat treated hardness than any other qualified Studio System material to date, unlocking new applications that require quality tooling material strength.
