TThis week, independent watchmaker Fortis presented two new Flieger pilot’s watches in environmentally friendly steel.

The Fortis Flieger F-39 and F-41 Midnight Blue come in recycled stainless steel cases that feature brushed surfaces, drilled lugs and even the bezel insert is made of steel. Recycled stainless steel is not the same as carbon neutral steel, but it is probably a step in the right direction, with the climate impact becoming greater in 2021, than maybe any. last year.

An attractive, vertically brushed matt midnight blue dial is surrounded by a slightly raised chapter ring with long, easy-to-read white indexes and sharps, as well as Arabic numerals just inside the ring, printed directly onto the dial. Bright orange “Berlac Fluor” is used for the majority of the central seconds hand, the top mark of 11 and 1 on the dial, for the text “AUTOMATIC” at 6 o’clock, and for the date function (at both the opening and the Numbers).

Despite the appearance of being printed, Fortis used luminous blocks, applied to the dial, for the indexes. Large, luminous sword-shaped hour and minute hands further enhance readability.

The neon orange “Synchroline†marking between 55 and 05 seconds at the top of the dial helps pilots to synchronize when flying in squadron formation. The range allows each pilot to adapt to the parameters of his teammates when setting the watch.

Above the flat dial is a flat sapphire crystal that sits just above the plane of the large 90 degree flange, and above it is a large, angled concave bezel that reads 0-12 and rotates back and forth. with 24 clicks. The relatively small crown is flat and screwed to the case, and water resistance is rated at 200 meters.

An external Sellita SW 200-1 which beats at 4 Hz, has 26 jewels and a power reserve of 38 hours, powers the hours, minutes, seconds and date.

The Fortis Flieger Midnight Blue in 39mm and 41mm comes on a gray-blue olive leaf tanned cowhide strap created from sustainable resources, handcrafted in Germany, with a steel pin buckle recycled stainless steel. The retail price of the Fortis Flieger F-39 (Ref. F4220011) or F-41 (Ref. F4220013) is $ 2,000. A stainless steel bracelet is available for an additional $ 500.
