Birch Technologies (Eden Prairie, MN) introduced the new, patent-pending TRU TEMP 2sd GEN Medium Temperature Black Oxide, a redesigned and improved finish based on the original and widely used Tru Temp XL introduced in 2001.
TRU TEMP 2sd GEN extends the previous finish by extending the finish to a wider range of ferrous metals including iron, steel, tool steels and most stainless steels, all with a black oxide formulation.
TRU TEMP 2sd GEN generates a darker, cleaner black oxide finish on an expanded range of high-alloy, high-strength steels and iron. The magnetite finish is dimensionless at 1 micron thick and ideal for machined components, unmachined components, powder metals, MIM parts, tooling, gears, sucker rods and more.
Operating at the optimum temperature range of 200 ° to 210 ° F like the original Tru Temp XL, TRU TEMP 2sd GEN makes it easy to use internally and user friendly. The chemistry is easy to manage and does not contain EPA regulated metals, so rinse waters are generally drainable by neutralizing the pH with a typical discharge range of pH 7-11.
In addition, reaching this pH range only requires 20% acid compared to other processes. From TRU TEMP 2sd GEN does not require any effluent treatment, the initial capital investment is only about half of the other blackening finishes.
Additional features of TRU TEMP 2sd GEN includes protection of critical surfaces during storage, shipping and start-up while resisting galling, helping with break-in lubrication and the absence of salt leaching issues.
The process can be designed around several factors including: alloy mix, hardness and responsiveness, surface condition prior to blackening, handling of parts used, and final finish requirement in terms of appearance, shine and corrosion resistance.
