A heavy-duty carbon steel skillet is a must in any home cook’s cookware collection. It’s as tough as cast iron and smooth as nonstick pans, making it a go-to for searing proteins, making quick breakfasts, simmering sauces and everything in between. And now, one of our favorite brands is on sale.

To buy: Merten & Storck 8-inch Carbon Steel Saucepan, $15 with coupon (originally $30) at amazon.com

Like the skillet we tested, the 8-inch version is pre-seasoned and forms a naturally nonstick coating with use. It is also super light and easier to maneuver than traditional cast iron since it weighs just under two pounds. The pan heats quickly and distributes it evenly, and it’s compatible with all cooktops and oven safe up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s even tough enough to use on open flames.

Amazon shoppers also rave about the Merten & Storck Carbon Steel Skillet, saying he has “most of the benefits of cast iron in a lighter package.” Buyers note that while it takes a bit of learning, it heats up quickly and is very easy to maintain. One of them even claimed that this saucepan makes their food taste better.

For cleaning, the manufacturer recommends scrubbing it by hand before and after use with warm soapy water and finishing it with oil before storing. Just be sure to keep it out of the dishwasher.
