In collaboration with artist Ricardo Ragazzoni, MX3D started working on the Tresse project in 2020. This fully 3D printed stainless steel sculpture has now been placed in a private garden in the south of France.

In his search for a manufacturing partner, Ragazzoni traveled to Italy and approached several companies that used traditional techniques, such as bronze casting or cut metal. However, these techniques did not fit the artist’s vision as he sought out new and innovative ways to produce his 4-meter-high steel sculpture. Tresse’s final project was fully 3D printed in stainless steel while the tips were polished and gold-plated in post-production.

With more than 20,000 kg of metal objects printed in 3D since 2014, MX3D brought large-scale robotic wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) and its market to life, making metal 3D printing more flexible, faster and more affordable. Today, the Dutch company is poised to further transform the market by launching the first dedicated robotic WAAM software that enables companies, engineers and designers to print large-scale, end-to-end 3D metal objects in-house.

“MX3D has the technique, the new language and the open intelligence to understand this very complex mathematical but also emotional sculpture. MX3D’s robotic wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technique allows for greater shape flexibility in shapes and textures and leads to a significant reduction in material. This process enables more complex geometries to be created than conventional manufacturing processes (such as CNC milling, cast iron) and higher speed and cost efficiency compared to powder-based metal AM processes. By controlling the entire WAAM workflow from CAD to print, MX3D’s technology has many advantages and allows you to go from idea to finished product in one go with MetalXL.
