Until October 2018, all nine models in the Ruger SP101 revolver line were machined from stainless steel and left in a gloss finish, leaving consumers with no option for a more understated blued model. After Ruger fans clamored for another option, Ruger presented their very first SP101 revolver machined from alloy steel and treated with a fully blued finish.

“As the first blued alloy model in this revolver family, this new configuration sets itself apart from other SP101s and makes an excellent compact and rugged transport firearm,” said Chris Kiloy, President and CEO of Ruger . “We have had several customer inquiries for this new model, and we are delighted to add it to the lineup. “

For defensive purposes, having a darker, blued finish on a concealed port revolver like the Ruger SP101 means that, even in an open port platform, the pistol is less likely to attract attention. The brushed finish of the alloy steel means the bluing does not shine like other blued handguns with a highly polished finish, ensuring the revolver can blend in better, especially when worn with darker clothing.

The new blued model of the Ruger SP101 is definitely designed for defensive and concealed use, having been built with a short 2.25-inch five-groove barrel with a 1:16-inch twist rate and a compact overall length of 7, 2 inches. The weapon, unloaded, weighs 26 ounces. Each revolver is also fitted with rubber grips which cushion the recoil of the .357 Mag. cartridges in this compact transport pistol. The wood inserts engraved on the sides of the handles provide additional texture for a better grip.

Other features of the Ruger SP101 include the fixed, angled front sight blade and rear sight groove integrated into the top strap of the gun frame. The gun is equipped with an external hammer spur to allow single and double action operation. Like all Ruger SP101 revolvers, the pistol features a triple locking design that holds the cylinder in place at the front, rear and bottom of the frame to increase durability and reliability. A transfer bar located inside the frame protects the gun against accidental discharge.

Each Ruger SP101 with a blued alloy finish retails for an MSRP of $ 719.
